Artist Submissions

(Updated 25 December 2009)

Hetang Yuese Media promotes 3 categories of events:
(1) Performances in Jz Club
(2) Monthly performances at the 333 seat performance hall of the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre; and
(3) The annual Jz Shanghai Music Festival (each autumn)

When making a submission please indicate the event for which you wish to be considered. Application to Jz Club can be made at any time of year anytime 6 weeks to 6 months prior to intended performance date. Submissions for a performance at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre should be made 6 months prior to the intended performance date. Submissions for performance opportunities at the Jz Shanghai Music Festival must be submitted before May 31st each year.

The provisional dates of the 2010 edition of the Jz Shanghai Music Festival are Monday 11 to Sunday 17 October 2010.

All submissions should be addressed to:

Mark Elliott
4/F, Bldg 12, Lane 280 Wukang Road
Xuhui District, Shanghai 200031, CHINA
tel: +86 21 64311075
email: [email protected]

What to submit:

1. A CD album by post. Youtube.com and yousendit.com are inaccessible within China. Please post CDs, we prefer not to download albums
2. A brief synopsis of your music (eg. a mix of standards and originals influenced by Thelonious Monk, Sun Ra and Miles Davis).
3. Indicate the event for which you wish to be considered (available dates).
4. A list of all group members' names and instruments.
5. Tech rider

How long to get a reply:

Received CDs will be acknowledged by e-mail immediately they arrive.

Process:

If your application to Jz Club is successful then a draft contract will be sent in due course. Applications to the Oriental Art Centre and the Jz Shanghai Music Festival take longer to process as the following extra documents will be required:

(1) Passport copies. A CLEAR & READABLE scan/photocopy of the passport of each band member and each person travelling (e.g. tour manager, sound engineer). The passports must be valid beyond 6 months of the date for application of the visa to enter China (application is usually made within 4 weeks of travel). This is a necessary requirement for a Chinese visa. Old passports MUST be renewed BEFORE the license application is made. It is extremely important that we are made aware of any passports LOST or RENEWED after the copies were submitted to begin the license application process.
7. A video recording of a previous live performance. A 45 minute video (DVD format preferred). This MUST feature all the band members who will play in China. It need not be professional quality, but the band members should be clearly visible. Do not send your only copy, it will not be returned. This is required to apply for a music license and will not be used for any other purpose.

Guidance notes - Jz Club

We have house bands playing 7 nights a week, and we usually don't book in special guest bands on Friday or Saturday nights. Usual bookings in the club are for 1 night only, and we usually only book 3-4 bands per month - so apply early!

Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays are quiet nights with slower music, Wednesday is our vocalists night, Thursday is jazz/rock. Try to plan your visit around these guidance notes. Some bands that have played in Jz Club recently and were very well received by our audience:
Iiro Rantala New Trio (www.iirorantala.com);
Jazz Folk (www.peterscherr.com);
Jazz Kamikaze (http://www.myspace.com/jazzkamikaze);
The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (http://www.jazzorchestra.nl/).
